Oliver Cromwell died on 3 September 1658; weeks later he was buried in Westminster Abbey and later accorded a State Funeral. By 1661 his body had been dug up, ceremonially hung and his head hacked off, before being publicly displayed, and becoming an object of curiosity and collector’s item before being reburied in Cambridge in 1960.
This new exhibit looks at this story, featuring rarely seen items from the museum’s collections and beyond, some of which have never been publicly displayed before.
