On 14 June 1645 a major battle was fought near the village of Naseby in Northamptonshire. It was the first test for Parliament’s new, national army under the command of Sir Thomas Fairfax, with Oliver Cromwell as his deputy, against the King’s veteran forces. It would turn out to be the decisive battle of the Civil Wars.
This exhibit looks at the origins of what would become today’s British Army and the events of this crucial battle, including Cromwell’s role. It will include rarely seen items, including an original plan of the battle.
