‘The dimensions of this mercy are above my thoughts’: Oliver Cromwell and the campaign and battle of Worcester.

In September 1651 – 375 years ago this autumn – the last major battle of the Civil Wars in Britain was fought in and around the city of Worcester. Here Parliamentarian forces defeated an Anglo-Scottish Royalist army led by Charles II, in the hope of him gaining his throne.

What brought this battle about? What was Cromwell’s role? What happened to Charles II in the aftermath – and what did this mean for the Republic?

Peter Gaunt is Emeritus Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Chester. His books include The British Wars, 1637-1651; The English Civil War: The Essential Readings; The English Civil Wars; Oliver Cromwell; and The Correspondence of Henry Cromwell, 1655-59. He is a former President of the Cromwell Association.
