‘Ranters Ranting during the English Revolution’ A talk by Joel Halcomb

Admission: £6.50 Adults, £5.00 Students/Museum Members

Location: Via Zoom

The ‘Ranters’ were one of the most radical, outrageous groups of the mid-1600s, but did they really exist?

In Norwich in 1650 two women were hauled before their puritan congregation to be disciplined for drinking on the sabbath, swearing, and reading scandalous, banned literature. They were ‘Ranters’, one of the most radical, outrageous groups to appear in the revolutions of the mid-17th-century, or so it would seem.

For decades historians have debated not just what the Ranters were, but whether they even existed. This talk will explore these debates and the plight of these two women, to think about who the Ranters were and why they matter.

Joel Halcomb is lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of East Anglia. He works on religious cultures in the British Revolution and recently co-edited (with Patrick Little and David Smith), volume 3 of The Letters, Writings, and Speeches of Oliver Cromwell (OUP, 2022).

This talk will be recorded and put on a private channel after the ‘live talk’ for ticket holders to view at their leisure if they miss the live talk or wish to view them again.
